Health Experts Warn Against Injecting Unapproved Peptides

As GLP-1 medications have made injectable weight-loss treatments more familiar to the public, doctors are warning about a growing trend involving people injecting peptides that have not been approved by the FDA.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that help signal different functions in the body. While some peptide-based medications are FDA approved and used under medical supervision, many peptides being promoted online for anti-aging, tanning, weight loss, and other wellness goals remain experimental and unapproved.

According to health experts, the rise of social media has fueled interest in these products, especially as some med spas and clinics use the term “peptides” to capitalize on the popularity of GLP-1 drugs. But doctors caution that many of these unapproved peptides are very different from tested, FDA-approved medications.

Dr. Peminda Cabandugama, an endocrinologist and obesity medicine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, warned that many of these products can be unsafe. Concerns include bacterial contamination, heavy metal exposure, inaccurate labeling, unknown ingredients, and possible disruption of the body’s hormonal system. Experts also warn that some side effects may not appear immediately and could create long-term health issues, including fertility concerns.

The key takeaway is that not all peptides are the same. While approved peptide medications have gone through regulatory review, many gray-market peptide products have not been evaluated for safety, quality, or effectiveness. Health experts are urging consumers to be cautious and to speak with a qualified medical professional before using any injectable product.
